Matt Snelling, Installation Technician Apprentice

Matt Snelling Installation Technician Apprentice Quote

It’s never too late to learn a new skill or career path. Many people believe they are defined by the career choices they made when they left school or college. Changing the course of your career later in life can be daunting. However, that’s exactly what Matt, our Installation Technician Apprentice decided to do.

Matt explains why he chose to apply for an apprenticeship with SNAP (part of Certas Energy) and discusses his experience so far:

Before my apprenticeship, I worked as a technical sales engineer for 5 years, supplying fastenings and fixings to end users. My clients were predominantly large companies within the offshore industry who built and maintained oil/gas rigs and wind farms.

After 5 years in my previous role I felt it was time to push myself out of my comfort zone and into a business where I could progress and see growth in my own capabilities. The UCT apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to do both of these things and proved that you’re never too old to change your career path and learn new skills.

Having studied Electrical/Electronic Engineering at college 10 years prior, but following other avenues thereafter, the UCT apprenticeship through SNAP was a great opportunity to rediscover my previous experience, yet push my learning towards a new area.

The apprenticeship itself is structured in a way which really appealed to me. A brilliant blend of classroom and on the job training where I am able to get hands on and put everything I’ve learnt into practice.

I have personally been extremely impressed by the support I have received throughout my apprenticeship so far. I have continually felt the encouragement to test and improve my knowledge without worrying whether I get things right or wrong.

I have been given all the necessary tools to fulfil my role at SNAP and to complete my ongoing apprenticeship coursework. I have so far learnt about data cabling, networking, security systems such as CCTV and ANPR and how to implement these areas into my day job.

I have also undertaken numerous exterior training courses to benefit my learning and have been fully supported to suggest any other training course which I think will be beneficial to excelling in my apprenticeship.

Together the UCT apprenticeship and role at SNAP have been challenging, extremely interesting, and I couldn’t be happier that I decided to go down this new career path, knowing that this could be the platform which opens up even more opportunities in the future.
