SHELL GTL FUEL
Many advantages in one fuel

A cleaner burning alternative to diesel

Slider

Improve local air quality through reduction in NOx and PM emissions

Shell GTL Fuel has improved combustion properties inside standard diesel engines and so helps reduce emissions of air pollutants. It’s free of unwanted components such as sulphur, metals, and aromatics, making it non-toxic and therefore less harmful to the environment.

DROP IN FUEL

Can be implemented as a drop-in replacement for conventional diesel

Helping to reduce local emissions immediately. Easy to utilise with new and older on-road diesel engines without the need for investment in new equipment or refuelling infrastructure.

LOWER EMISSIONS

Reduced emissions of regulated pollutants

  • Nitrogen Oxides (NOX)
  • Particulate Matter (PM)
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO)
  • Unburnt Hydrocarbons (HC’s)

NOISE REDUCTION

Noise levels in some engines can be reduced by 1-4 dB

The high cetane number of the fuel shortens the ignition delay thus reducing diesel knock intensity and reducing combustion noise in both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicle engines.

Shell has performed a number of tests to investigate the reduction in combustion noise, as well as overall vehicle noise from the use of Shell GTL Fuel. Tests have measured noise from engines on engine test beds, as well as from inside and outside of the vehicle, on both chassis dynamometers and ‘on-the-road’. The research shows that there can be a considerable reduction in combustion noise from the use of Shell GTL Fuel compared to conventional diesel of 1-4dB.

NON TOXIC

Readily biodegradeable

The composition of Shell GTL Fuel, particularly the low aromatic content, suggests that it is likely to be more benign, readily biodegradable and pose less environmental hazards than conventional diesel.

OUDORLESS

Creating cleaner working environments

The appearance of Shell GTL Fuel is clear and bright. It is almost water-like in colour and there is no characteristic diesel fuel type odour, due to the lack of sulphur and aromatics.

COLD START

Winter grade fuel all year round

At low temperatures, the free flow of diesel fuel may be impeded by the blocking of fuel lines and filters by particles of paraffin wax that precipitate out of solution as the fuel cools.

Shell GTL Fuel has excellent low temperature performance, with a low cloud point and improved cold start performance due to the high cetane number.

STORAGE STABILITY

Better safety, handling and storage characteristics due to a higher flash point

Issues with storage stability of diesel fuels have been related to gum and sludge formation. These unwanted products are thought to be formed primarily by reactions involving polar nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen-containing compounds in the fuel. As these are absent Shell GTL Fuel it is more stable in storage than conventional diesel. During the considerable field experience with Shell GTL Fuel no storage issues have been encountered.
