Roteb Lease does a cleaner job with GTL Fuel

Introduction

Cars, vans, garbage trucks and snow ploughs, the job of managing, maintaining and repairing vehicles for the vibrant city of Rotterdam is carried out by Roteb Lease.

They do this with the intention to keep the city clean and pleasant for living, working and recreation. Using GTL Fuel is helping them pay particular attention to local air quality.

The challenge

Most of Roteb’s specialised vehicles’ work takes place in the city centre, where pedestrians and its own staff are constantly walking around the vehicles.

The Municipality of Rotterdam uses so-called ‘environmental zones’ which means that only vehicles emitting less local emissions (compared to regular diesel) are permitted to drive within the specified zones.

Within the Municipality Roteb has been working intensively to improve local air quality and has set up a programme, the Rotterdam Action Programme Airquality (RAL) with the aim of reducing particulate emissions from vehicle exhausts.

The solution

Roteb has been using GTL Fuel in 50 vehicles – 25 garbage trucks and 25 street sweepers, since November 2012. They chose GTL Fuel because it is a cleaner burning fuel compared to regular diesel and in this way expect people in the city to be less exposed to local emissions. To help reduce local emissions, Roteb had previously tested several other types of fuel such as bio ethanol, bio gasoil and LPG. Most came with complications, such as the need to modify existing vehicles or the requirement for shorter maintenance intervals. “A great advantage of GTL Fuel for us,” says Peter Witvliet, Head of Roteb Lease, “was that there was no modification or extra maintenance required. The product was directly applicable and ready to go!”
