Reduce your emissions by up to 90% with HVO.
HVO is an excellent fossil-free alternative, ideal for use in commercial vehicles and machinery, that can drastically improve your CO2 emissions. Also known as Renewable Diesel, HVO is a biofuel that derives from waste vegetable oils, animal fats, and other residues.
Order HVOWhat is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)?
Despite its name, hydrotreated vegetable oil no longer derives from just vegetable oil. Its source can also include animal fats and other waste and residues from the food processing industry. HVO’s renewable source results in a 80% lower CO2 emission than regular diesel. It is produced through a process called ‘hydrotreating’ where hydrogen is used to remove oxygen from the fatty acids in vegetable oils and animal fats.
Is HVO fuel better than diesel?
Businesses thinking about switching to a more sustainable fuel can be unsure where to begin. Our HVO experts are on hand to answer any questions you may have, including more about Certas Energy’s HVO fuel’s benefits. Here, our experts have outlined three key reasons you should make the switch:

Significantly reduce your CO2 emissions
HVO fuel is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, which can reduce your CO2 emissions by up to 90%. The process of creating HVO produces a pure, clear, odourless liquid hydrocarbon fuel with minimal sulphur content. This removes impurities and other substances that cause pollution and damage the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly.

No need to change your
current diesel machinery
Unlike some fuel alternatives, HVO fuel can be used in any existing diesel machinery you have without the need for expensive modifications or upgrades. HVO is a drop-in fuel, meaning its chemical structure and properties are virtually identical to fossil diesel. This allows it to be used in existing engines and infrastructure without modifications.

Improved reliability & stability
Standard diesel can gel in cold conditions due to the presence of paraffins, which can cause fuel filters to clog. HVO has superior cold-weather properties, with a lower cold point and better flow characteristics, making it more reliable in freezing conditions.
Standard diesel also contains bio-components (in blended forms like B7 or B10) that can attract moisture and promote microbial growth, leading to contamination over time.

Reduce Emissions & Meet ESG Goals with Certas Energy HVO Fuel
Companies across the UK face increasing pressure to significantly reduce their carbon footprint, align with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, and contribute to the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.
Understanding these challenges is core to our mission at Certas Energy. That’s precisely why we provide Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, a premium-quality, sustainable diesel alternative engineered to help your business make immediate, impactful progress towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Drive Down Emissions with a Practical Solution
Certas Energy HVO fuel is designed as a ‘drop-in’ replacement for conventional red or white diesel. This means it can typically be used in your existing diesel engines and machinery without requiring costly modifications or significant downtime, allowing for a smooth transition to lower-emission operations.

Targeting Scope 1 Emissions
HVO directly addresses your Scope 1 emissions, the greenhouse gases released from assets your business owns or controls. By switching your fleet, plant, generators, or industrial heating systems to HVO, you can achieve a dramatic reduction in net CO2 emissions, often by up to 80%, compared to traditional fossil diesel. Crucially, HVO also significantly lowers local air pollutants, including Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM), contributing to healthier environments where you operate.

Reducing Scope 3 Impact
Your commitment to sustainability extends across your value chain. Utilising HVO fuel helps diminish your Scope 3 emissions by reducing the carbon impact associated with the extraction, refining, and transportation of the fossil fuels it effectively replaces. This demonstrates a holistic approach to decarbonisation, enhancing your environmental credentials.
Strengthen Your ESG
Performance & Reputation
Integrating HVO fuel into your energy strategy is a clear, demonstrable action that strengthens your ESG performance. The significant reduction in local air pollutants directly supports the critical ‘Environmental’ pillar, showcasing your commitment to climate action and responsible resource management.
This proactive stance not only helps meet reporting requirements but also builds significant trust and improves your reputation among investors, customers, employees, and the wider community, positioning your business as forward-thinking and environmentally conscious.

Align with Government Targets
& Your Net Zero Pathway
The UK government has set legally binding Net Zero targets for 2050, creating a clear imperative for businesses to decarbonise. HVO fuel offers a practical, commercially viable solution available today, enabling your business to align with these national objectives and meet interim carbon reduction goals now.
Whether navigating evolving regulations, meeting Clean Air Zone standards, or simply future proofing your operations, choosing HVO provides an immediate pathway to lower carbon intensity without demanding disruptive capital expenditure on new fleets or infrastructure. It serves as a vital transitional fuel, supporting your business on its essential journey towards Net Zero.

HVO FAQs
Here, we have put together a series of Frequently Asked Questions based on what customers are asking us about HVO.
What is HVO fuel?
Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a paraffinic drop-in diesel alternative fuel, manufactured from 100% renewable and sustainable waste.
As a sustainable fuel on the market, it can be used as a replacement for diesel and can lower fuel-related net carbon emissions by up to 90% without any engine modification.
Practically FAME, sulphur and fossil free*, it is made using vegetable fats and oils. Unlike conventional biodiesel, hydrogen (rather than methanol), is used as a catalyst, which makes HVO cleaner burning and ensures a longer shelf life.
What is paraffinic diesel?
An example of a paraffinic diesel is HVO. A paraffinic diesel is a synthetic diesel with near-zero sulphur and very low aromatics content, reducing unregulated emissions of toxic hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). HVO meets the international fuel standard EN 15940, the specification for paraffinic diesel.
Is HVO a biofuel?
Yes. HVO is a type of biofuel – also known as a renewable diesel – produced from waste vegetable oils and fats. Hydrogen is used as a catalyst instead of methanol making it a more sustainable and eco-friendly biofuel option.
What is HVO used for?
HVO is suitable for on- and off-road vehicles, plant and machinery across a range of industries including construction, agriculture, road and rail transport, haulage, marine and the public sector. If your business is reliant on diesel or you have a large commercial fleet, HVO provides a real opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 90%.
Is HVO road legal?
Yes. HVO fuel is a completely compliant fuel that can be legally used to power on and off-road machinery and vehicles. HVO fuel can also be used as a heating solution, with minor boiler adjustments. Visit our blog to find out about the Future Ready Fuels project, which Certas Energy is helping to lead, is helping to make HVO-powered boilers a reality.
