The county of Kent is widely known as the Garden of England, but with growing pressure for the construction of new homes and increasing levels of traffic in the region, concerns around air quality are more serious than ever before.
There is now just under one month to go until the Certas Energy Clean Air Conference which will take place at the Port Lympne Hotel on Tuesday 7th November. The event will highlight the availability of cleaner burning alternative fuels such as GTL Fuel and deliver practical advice on how businesses can make a difference to air quality today by making smarter fuel choices.

Deborah Kapaj, Sustainable Estates Programme Manager at Kent County Council said: “Fresh air, something we take for granted in Kent? Well it is the Garden of England! With a growing population and Kent being a gateway to Europe we need to consider how we strike a healthy balance between growth and financial prosperity and protecting our health now and into the future. I will be sharing how Kent County Council is rising to the air quality challenge and the key question for delegates is how can they equip their businesses to do the same.”
Stephen Peckham, Professor of Health Policy at the University of Kent further highlighted the air quality challenge in Kent: “Poor air quality remains a significant problem in Kent. Roadside Nitrogen Dioxide levels remain high in West Kent with most areas having levels above the national limits as do some levels in Eastern Kent – for example in Dover and in Canterbury. While particulate levels do not exceed national limits, levels are above those that the World Health Organisation considers harmful to health and while some reductions the levels, especially at the roadside are not widely measured across the county.
“The levels of pollution in the county have significant health implications. Public Health England have estimated that there are 745 premature deaths every year with some 7,500 years of life lost from fine particulates. In addition, people with respiratory diseases – especially children with asthma – are adversely affected every day. The Certas Energy Clean Air Conference will be a great opportunity to discuss what we can do on a regional level to tackle the air quality crisis.”
