Before I started my apprenticeship I worked at a postal service Company, I was in a good job and even though I enjoyed it, I had always wanted to pursue a career in driving. However, putting yourself through the HGV training and tests, especially when you have a young son, is very expensive.
I did an internet search and by chance I came across a Driver Apprenticeship vacancy at Certas Energy. It seemed perfect, I couldn’t believe it when I was offered the job. I felt that everything just fell into place.
My training got off to a great start, I was paired with Driver Trainers Darren and Mark at Coleshill. The Drivers Trainers have great knowledge and really patient with me during training. I also gained my Maths and English qualifications.
The managers and all the drivers are all supportive. I passed my HGV practical test and was really looking forward to starting own my own.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 did slightly affect my training progress. At the start of the pandemic the social distancing measures made the in-cab training really difficult, so I was furloughed for 3 months. I took the opportunity to complete most of my Apprenticeship folder, but I really couldn’t wait to get back to work.
I’ve been driving solo for about 2 months now and absolutely I love it. I hadn’t been driving long when we got snow, but the drivers have been giving me advice about driving in the bad weather conditions.
I aim to pass the final module of my HGV licence which is currently on hold due to the current lockdown, I can then complete my final end point assessment.
I’m so grateful for the opportunity, I’m in a great job that I love. I still pinch myself today.
