Manager Glynn talks about Benefits of Driver Apprentices

Like all apprentices across the business, our driver apprentices are highly valued.  With the driver programme, the expert training is very hands-on and colleagues in the depots work closely with the apprentices to support them.  We hear from Depot Operations Supervisor, Glynn to hear how driver apprentices have supported the busy depot in Coleshill.

“The apprenticeship scheme has been hugely successful for us so far here at our Coleshill site for Certas Energy. We have had 2 apprentices, Tom and Scott.

The role of a driver at Certas Energy can be complex with a number of standards, rules and regulations, as well as the truck equipment and on-site environments to learn about and work with. All of this can be very stressful for a new driver, but the apprenticeship scheme allows us to spread the learning over a 12-month period. This ensures that we can nurture the driver slowly but surely throughout the process, making sure that the knowledge, skills and behaviours gained can be monitored and tested along the way.

Our two apprentices, Scott and Tom, were able to rise to the challenge of the scheme despite the training being slowed considerably with the Covid-19 restrictions during the final stages.

Our newest apprentice Scott, has commented that he loves being at work and learning.   I am proud to say that both passed the LGV test at the first attempt and have shown a huge commitment and willingness to learn.

I have particularly enjoyed guiding them through the process, providing them with whatever support they needed and watching them progress as they gained experience.  The apprenticeship scheme offers a fantastic opportunity for non-HGV drivers who are young and keen to join a progressive company who can offer excellent training from start to finish.  Both Scott and Tom seem to really value the opportunity that this role offers, and it has been a pleasure to see them progress over the course of the apprenticeship.

Personally, I sincerely hope that we can take on more apprentices soon as I feel this is the way forward for introducing young drivers into the business.
