“I enjoy the thought of learning as you work, in a proper workplace so getting plenty of experience with the benefit of getting paid too!”
Morgan is an Apprentice IT Business Administrator and talks about her decision to begin an apprenticeship at Certas Energy and her journey so far.
“Before I chose to do this apprenticeship I was still at school and had a part time job working as a sales assistant in Schuh. I worked there most weekends which really helped me build more confidence and gain lots of customer service experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at schuh, met loads of new people and it gave me some proper experience in the world of work.
During this time, and thinking about my future, I decided to apply to university, simply because I was unsure of what else to do. I was offered a place which I was so happy about. However, after thinking carefully, I decided to decline the offer. I just knew it wasn’t the right decision for me and I wanted to see what other options I had.
My main concern with going to full time further education was that I wouldn’t be fully committed to it. I didn’t want to waste my time. I considered different options and decided that an apprenticeship would be more suited to me.
I wanted to do something a little different from all my friends that I knew would be more beneficial for myself in the long run and not just do something for the sake of it. I enjoy the thought of learning as you work, in a proper workplace so getting plenty of experience with the benefit of getting paid too!
In the few months I have been an apprentice I’ve learnt much more than I would’ve done had I taken the university route. I’ve gained experience in a proper workplace, working both with colleagues and on my own. It’s improved my confidence and bettered my people skills too.
I have also significantly improved my IT skills. It’s made me realise that no matter what I choose to do, if I work hard enough I can do it.
